Detection of aflatoxins in milk
Take aflatoxin testing to the next level
By posing a risk to consumers’ health, aflatoxins increase discards and impact your reputation. Take aflatoxin testing to the next level to get more from your milk.
What are aflatoxins?
Aflatoxins are toxic substances produced by some molds in the Aspergillus genus. Aflatoxins can contaminate grains, nuts, and seeds. When cows eat tainted feed, aflatoxins enter their milk after being processed in the liver. This can make contaminated milk – and dairy products made from it - a health risk for consumers.

Aflatoxins: causes, health risks and impact
What causes aflatoxins?
Aflatoxins get into milk when animals eat contaminated feed. Molds, like Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus, grow on stored grains such as corn, peanuts, and cottonseed. Warm, humid conditions encourage mold growth, leading to contamination.

What are the health risks of aflatoxins?
The most common and most toxic aflatoxin is B1. When dairy animals eat feed contaminated with B1, it's metabolized into aflatoxin M1. This is then excreted in milk. Aflatoxin M1 is a known carcinogen, posing serious health risks to anyone who consumes it.

What are the regulations relating to aflatoxins?
The presence of aflatoxin M1 in milk has led to regulatory action in many countries and regions. These include the EU, the USA, Japan, China and Brazil. The regulations set maximum allowable levels of aflatoxins in milk.

How do aflatoxins impact dairies?
In some regions, dairies are forced to discard milk that exceeds the regulatory limit. Dairies may also face fines, especially for repeated violations. And in extreme cases, they may even face closure or have their license revoked.

How can aflatoxins damage brands?
Loss of trust can happen fast when a dairy is linked to aflatoxin contamination. People expect dairy products to be safe and good for them. Contamination – and the negative publicity that comes with it - can destroy this confidence and negatively impact dairy brands.
