We conduct sustainability studies to compare the environmental and societal benefits of using biosolutions compared to conventional technologies, which are often fossil-based or synthetic.

The studies are data-driven and science-based. We leverage our decades of expertise within the field of environmental science and life cycle assessment.

Often conducted in collaboration with customers, these studies leverage application data to highlight measurable environmental and societal benefits. They empower customers to clearly articulate the proven sustainability benefits of their products, processes, or services.

Our biosolutions help meet UN Sustainable Development goals

To document the positive impact of our portfolio on the world, we assess how our biosolutions contribute positively to the six UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that are most relevant to us. Every year, we assess the share of our sales and projects in innovation pipeline that aligns to at least one of the six SDGs.

    Enables efficient ethanol production from agricultural residues like wheat straw, rice straw, and corn stover. Biofuels are vital for decarbonizing heavy transport. For example, using straw-based ethanol can lead to reduction of GHG emissions by 90% or more compared to gasoline.

    Novonesis' JumpStart®

    Contains a fungus naturally found in soil that improves phosphorus uptake in crops like corn, soy, wheat, and canola. It enhances early vigor, stress tolerance, and yields while reducing washout of nitrogen to aquatic ecosystems and lowering emissions of nitrous oxide, a potent greenhouse gas.

  • Novonesis' ProAct 360™

    Novonesis' ProAct 360™

    Protein is vital for livestock, but undigested protein in feed causes ammonia (NH3), nitrate (NO3), and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions via manure. Feed proteases like ProAct 360™ enhance protein digestibility. If protease was used widely in poultry production, its use could cut NH3 emissions by 3-4%, saving 130,000 tons of NH3 globally each year.

    Enzymes can replace some surfactants in detergents for effective stain removal. Our study estimates that if 50% of all washes in Latin America used enzyme-rich detergents with 30% fewer surfactants, it could save the planet from 50,000 tonnes of chemicals annually.
